Our Rug Cleaning Process
Watch our 10 step rug cleaning video:
Step 1: Pre-Inspection and Pick Up
Our company will come to your home to pick up your rug. We will determine as much as we possibly can about the type of rug and inherent qualities that may affect cleaning. We will outline the expected results and cleaning “prescription”.
Step 2: Color Testing
Hand woven rugs are made with a verity of vegetable dies. Some stable and others not so stable. So we must test all colors on every rug before cleaning to determine the method that would be best suited for the rug.
Step 3: Dusting
Woven rugs, especially hand knotted rugs are designed to hide dry soil. Therefore we use a variety of techniques to “dust” the rugs, front and back. We use some special vacuum attachments as well as several other methods. This we feel is one of the most important steps in cleaning any textile.
Step 4: Pre-Spot and Fringe Preparation
Any potentially difficult spots will be pre-treated with special solutions to increase chances of removal. The fringe is also pre-treated for maximum soil removal.
Step 5: Shampoo
Our specially treated water is now applied to the rug. Once the rug is thoroughly wet an Oriental Rug Shampoo is applied. This is now massaged into the rug by hand to get maximum cleaning while protecting sensitive natural fibers. Doing this process by hand allows us full control and allows us to treat each rug differently. And as you know, each hand woven rug is different.
Step 6: Rinse
This is the most labor intensive part of our cleaning process. Depending on the type of rug we are cleaning, so there are many variations. But for the most part we now will thoroughly rinse the rug with our treated water. The water is then squeezed out of the rug with hand tools to prepare it for the drying process. This rinsing process is repeated until the water we are removing from your rug is clean.
Step 7: Drying
Once the soils have been rinsed away, the rug begins the drying process by being dried by being placed face down and hours later hung up to complete it’s drying process. Hanging the rug for drying is essential to avoid unnatural shrinkage and damage to colors.
Step 8: Finishing
Once the rug is dry, the fringe can now be finished. After this has been accomplished fringe is combed out by hand and the rug is also hand groomed with soft brushes.
Step 9: Sealing (optional)
We can now apply a special sealant for wool. This will help to protect the rug from spills and stains.
Step 10: Post Inspection and Delivery
I will then give your rug a final inspection and release it for delivery.
